Scale Is Quietly Killing Your Dishwasher: South Florida Hard Water, Explained by a Tech

Open a dishwasher that’s worked for six or seven years anywhere from Dania Beach down to Aventura and you’ll usually find the same thing on the heating element: a crusty mineral jacket, like the inside of an old kettle. That’s scale, and it’s not a cosmetic issue. It’s the slow-motion failure mode of half the dishwashers we open up, and most owners have never been told it’s happening.
Our water comes out of a limestone aquifer, which means it arrives carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium — moderately hard, in plain terms. Every time your dishwasher heats that water, some of those minerals come out of solution and stay behind. The machine is, in effect, distilling rock onto its own components, one cycle at a time.
Where the scale lands, and what it breaks
The heating element takes the worst of it, because scale forms fastest on hot surfaces. A mineral jacket insulates the element, so it runs hotter internally to deliver the same water temperature. Hotter element, shorter life — and on machines that monitor heating rate, a scaled element heats water slowly enough to trigger heater faults even though the element technically still works. We replace elements that died of insulation, not of electricity.
Spray arm nozzles are small precision holes, and scale narrows them. The spray pattern weakens and skews, the upper rack stops getting properly hit, and you start blaming the detergent. By the time nozzles are visibly crusted, wash performance has been degrading for months.
Sensors suffer quietly. Turbidity sensors that judge how dirty the water is, temperature sensors, water-level pressure chambers — all of them misread once mineral film builds up. The machine starts making bad decisions: cycles stretch longer as it tries to “finish” cleaning water it can’t read correctly, or heating overshoots because the sensor reports lazily.
The inlet valve meters water through a small orifice and seals against a rubber diaphragm. Mineral grit erodes the seal and crusts the orifice. The end stages are a valve that fills slowly — or one that never quite closes, which is a leak risk in a condo, not just a performance issue.
The symptoms, in the order owners notice them
- Cloudy glassware that doesn’t wipe clean — etched or filmed by mineral-heavy water.
- Cycles getting longer. Slow heating and confused sensors both stretch cycle times. A machine that used to finish in 90 minutes and now wants two and a half hours is usually telling a scale story.
- Gritty or spotted dishes from the top rack — the first casualty of weakened spray pressure.
- Heater or thermistor fault codes, the stage where the machine stops hinting and starts complaining.
What actually removes scale
Citric acid is the workhorse. A citric-acid descaler (or a branded dishwasher cleaner built on it) run on the hottest cycle, machine empty, dissolves mineral deposits from the element, sump, and spray arms. In SE Broward water, every couple of months is a reasonable rhythm; if you wait for the glassware to go cloudy, you’ve waited slightly too long. Vinegar works in a pinch but is gentler on scale and harsher on rubber seals over repeated use — citric acid is the better tool.
If you own a European machine, use the salt compartment. Bosch and Miele dishwashers have a built-in water softener — that round cap in the floor of the tub — and it only works if you keep it fed with dishwasher salt and set the hardness level in the machine’s settings. A remarkable number of these machines in local condos have never had salt in them, which means their owners paid for a softener and then ran hard water through it anyway. Fed properly, that softener largely takes scale off the table.
Rinse aid, every time. It doesn’t prevent scale inside the machine, but it sheets water off dishes so minerals don’t dry onto them, and it noticeably improves drying. Keep the dispenser full; it’s the cheapest improvement in this entire article.
What a technician does that the bottle can’t
Descaler reaches what water reaches. It doesn’t restore an element that’s already failing, re-seat an inlet valve that’s eroded, clean a pressure chamber that’s crusted shut, or recalibrate a machine throwing heater codes. A proper service visit means testing the element’s actual draw, pulling and inspecting the valve, opening the sump if the wash pump sounds labored, and clearing scale from the places a hot cycle never touches. On a quality machine — and the Bosch and Miele units common in buildings from Hallandale Beach to Sunny Isles Beach are worth the trouble — de-scaling and one or two parts often buys years. The habit list
- Citric-acid descale every 2-3 months, empty machine, hottest cycle.
- Salt in the softener if your machine has one — and check that the hardness setting was ever configured.
- Rinse aid topped up, always.
- Pull the spray arms once in a while and look at the nozzles; a toothpick clears early buildup.
- When cycles stretch or heater faults appear, stop descaling and start diagnosing — at that point scale has already done structural work.
