Ventless Dryer Getting Slower? Condenser and Heat-Pump Dryer Maintenance That Actually Works

Ventless dryers rarely die suddenly. They decline — a 90-minute cycle becomes two hours, two hours becomes three, and somewhere along the way the owner starts running everything twice and calling it normal. By the time we’re standing in a laundry closet in Aventura or Sunny Isles Beach, the machine has usually been asking for the same simple maintenance for a year, in the only language it has: damp clothes.
The good news is that the decline is mostly reversible, because the cause is mostly lint and water in places the owner was never shown. Here’s how these machines actually work, where they clog, and which cleaning jobs are yours versus ours.
Sixty seconds on how they work
A condenser dryer runs two air loops. The inner loop heats air, passes it through the tumbling clothes to pick up moisture, then pushes it through a heat exchanger — the condenser — where it’s cooled by a second loop of room air until the moisture condenses out as liquid. That water goes to a tank or a drain, the dried air is reheated, and around it goes.
A heat-pump dryer replaces the plain heater and room-air cooling with a small refrigeration circuit: an evaporator coil chills the moist air to wring water out, and a condenser coil reheats the same air using the heat just removed. Nothing is wasted, which is why these machines sip electricity and run gentler, lower temperatures — and why they’re slower by design.
The detail that matters for maintenance: in both designs, all the moist, lint-carrying air is repeatedly forced through fine heat-exchanger fins. The machine’s performance lives and dies on those fins staying open.
Why lint gets past the screen
The door lint screen catches the visible fluff. Fine fibers pass straight through — they always have, in every dryer ever made. In a vented machine they blow out of the building. In a ventless machine there is no “out”: every fiber that clears the screen is still inside the system, and the place air slows down and moisture condenses is exactly the heat exchanger. Wet fins plus fine lint makes felt. A condenser matted with damp lint can’t condense, so moisture stays in the air loop, cycles stretch, and the machine works harder to accomplish less. This is the single mechanism behind most “my ventless dryer got slow” calls.
The secondary filters nobody told you about
Manufacturers know about the felt problem, so most ventless machines have a second line of defense: a foam pad, fine mesh, or plastic-framed filter sitting behind a flap low on the front of the machine, directly upstream of the heat exchanger. It’s meant to be rinsed every few weeks.
In our experience servicing these machines across SE Broward’s newer towers, a healthy share of owners have never opened that flap — many genuinely didn’t know it existed, because the machine came with the condo and the manual didn’t. If you take one action from this article: go find that lower panel, open it, and see what’s living there. If the foam pad has compressed into grey felt, you’ve found your three-hour cycles.
The water has to go somewhere
Every liter wrung out of your laundry becomes liquid the machine must dispose of — into a tank you empty, or via a small condensate pump into a drain line. This path clogs with the same lint sludge:
- Tank machines stop mid-cycle with a “tank full” complaint, sometimes when the tank is empty — because the float or the channel feeding it is gummed up.
- Pumped machines fail less politely. A sludged pump or kinked drain hose means water backs up inside the machine; most models detect it and halt with a generic error, some simply quit drying well, and the worst case is water finding the floor — which, in a condo, is never only your problem.
If your machine drains to a hose, that hose and the little sump it draws from deserve a check once or twice a year. The condensate pump itself is a wear part; a humming, rattling, or silent pump is a normal repair, not a death sentence.
Reading the symptoms
- Damp loads at cycle end, especially towels and denim — condenser airflow or the moisture-sensing logic being fooled by it.
- Cycle times creeping up month over month. Heat-pump machines are slow, but they should be consistently slow. Trend matters more than absolute time.
- Stop-start behavior or generic fault codes. Different brands phrase it differently; the underlying causes cluster heavily around airflow, condensate, and temperature sensors that scale and lint have skewed.
- A laundry closet that’s hotter than usual — heat the exchanger can’t transfer ends up in the room.
- Visible water under or inside the machine. Stop and get it looked at; see the paragraph above about floors and neighbors.
What’s yours, what’s ours
Yours: the door lint screen every load; the secondary filter or foam pad every few weeks; a careful vacuum of the visible condenser face (soft brush attachment, gentle — fins bend); the tank or drain hose check; and on heat-pump models that allow it, a low-pressure rinse of the accessible exchanger surface per the manual.

A proper teardown gets at the felt deep in the exchanger where vacuums don’t reach, the blower wheel and air channels (lint mats there too), the condensate sump and pump, and the sensors whose readings drive the auto-dry logic. On heat-pump machines the evaporator fins are delicate and sit behind panels not meant for casual removal — when those are matted, this is genuinely a tech job, and it’s a routine one for our dryer repair team.
